Butterfat Trio

Former Romney resident and 1990 Hampshire High
graduate Rob Cookman makes a concert stop in Romney
for a March 19, 7 p.m. performance at The Bottling
Works with his jazz group, Butterfat Trio. Cookman
composed the majority of the songs, including the
title track, on the trio's studio recording debut,
"Under Dog." The concert is hosted by the Loy
Foundation and it is the trio's first visit visit to
Hampshire County. Admission is free. A free-will
donation is suggested. Butterfat Trio was formed in
1998 by keyboardist Cookman, drummer Jeff Moehle, and
bassist Lyman Medeiros. Performing both as a group
and as individuals, Cookman and his trio mates have
toured the five major continents. Their eclectic and
numerous perfomance credits include the names of jazz
greats Larry Goldings, Danilo Perez, Michael Buble and
Steve Tyrell, to the late, great rocker John Entwistle
of The Who. While grounded in jazz and drawing
comparison to the Bad Plus, Medeski, Martin and Wood,
and the Brad Meldau Trio - Butterfat's real passion
lies in fusing contemporary rhythms with standard and
popular song, as well as creating a body of original
work that exemplify their very modern composition and
arrangement ideals. The trio employs a vast body of
music, adapting to most every musical environment.
Ranging from haunting ballads and traditional
standards to gritty second-line and detroit-style funk
grooves. The Butterfat Trio formula for its jazz
tunes on "Under Dog" is geared toward tight, inventive
bursts based on standard jazz progression -- where a
musical theme is developed through disciplined layers
of exploration -- allowing several standout solos from
each musician that aren't overdone. Cookman calls
Chicago home these days. The concert stop in Romney is
part of a multi-city early spring tour by his trio. To
