Israel Welch Scholarship Open for Applicants

As part of Hampshire County's 250th Anniversary celebration during 2004, the Hampshire County Arts Council worked with the Hampshire 250 Committee on a project to record our local musicians. Financial assistance for the project was provided by the WV Humanities Council. The resulting 2 CD-set and accompanying commemorative booklet, All Smiles Tonight, were made available for sale and can still be purchased at the Taggart Hall Visitors Center, Anderson's Corner, Potomac Music and The Bottling Works. Proceeds from the sales have been directed to the Hampshire County Arts Council's Israel Welch Scholarship Fund.
In memory of Welch, an accomplished fiddler recorded by the Augusta Heritage Center and certainly one of Hampshire County's most noted musicians, the Scholarship was established to help encourage the continuation of traditional music in our midst. The first Israel Welch scholarship was awarded in 2002 and sent Dakota Hobbie to the Augusta Heritage Workshop's Old Time Week in Elkins, WV. With the funds from the sales of All Smiles Tonight, a second scholarship is now offered to another budding Hampshire County musician.
Applicants may be any age and may play any traditional instrument, but may not have previously won the scholarship. The award will cover tuition to either an Augusta Heritage Workshop or a Common Ground on the Hill Heritage Workshop and will be paid directly to the music camp. The winner will be responsible for his or her own lodging, meal and travel expenses. Details about both camps are available on-line (www.augustaheritage.com and www.commongroundonthehill.com). Augusta Heritage may have assistance available for WV residents.
Deadline for applications is April 15. Selection is anticipated by May 1. To apply:
Submit a brief cassette tape of you playing (1 or 2 tunes), Name, Address, Phone number, Age, and answer the following questions: When and why did you get started playing your instrument? What would you hope to accomplish if you are awarded this scholarship?
Send applications to: Hampshire County Arts Council, P.O. Box 624, Romney, WV 26757 or give to any Arts Council officer (co-directors Shari Gallery, Janet Gould, or Michael Hasty, secretary Darla Cook or treasurer Kate McWilliams).
