Work on Display:
In addition to traditional landscape, portrait and fine art photography,
Mr. Brown has developed a unique digital process, which renders
photographs into images that appear more like artist illustrations.
"Some of the processes are quite time consuming like painting
with a computer. But I find the images exciting and full of life
because they move away from photo-realism toward impressionism.
I like to explore the dynamic range of visual images and explore
vivid surreal colors, ultra contrast and extreme perspectives."
Mr. Brown produces his images both as framed enlargements and
as greeting cards, sold both retail and for fund-raising purposes
for churches and organizations.
Background:
LD Brown has been a part-time graphic artist and photographer
for over thirty years. While living in the DC area, his photography
and pen & ink wash drawings were sold through the Alpha Gallery,
in Rockville, Maryland. Mr. Brown served as general manager of
United Photo Lab Services in Washington DC during the 1970’s
where he developed associations and collaborations with a number
of professional photographers, most notably, Dean Beasom, senior
photographer for the National Gallery of Art. During the 1980’s
Mr. Brown operated his own a part-time portrait studio in Rosslyn,
Virginia called Astoria Studio. Currently, Mr. Brown runs a promotional
photography and graphic art service in Romney, WV, called LD Brown
Arts.
In addition to graphic arts, Mr. Brown is a news correspondent
for the Cumberland Times Newspaper and co-chairperson of Ice Mountain
Writers. He is also a singer-songwriter who performs locally and
in the DC area, sometimes as part of a folk duo, Bodine &
Brown. From 2003 to 2005 Mr. Brown founded and sponsored a popular
musician showcase venue known as Performers
Studio. More recently he produces music concerts a few times
a year under the name Performers Studio... generally to help promote
a cause, celebration, deserving business or special occasion.
Larry currently performs as part of the trio, The Urban Refugees,
with Bob and Karen Garel.
Mr. Brown grew up in California and has photographed much of
the country. In addition to living in the Washington DC area,
Mr. Brown has pursued his art in New York City, Virginia Beach
and Bend, Oregon.
He moved to Romney from Reston, Virginia in 2003.
Mr. Brown also offers informal* & candid photography for
weddings and special events as well as informal portraits of people,
pets, architecture and automobiles.
(*) Informal photography involves the use of available or
natural lighting as opposed to the use of studio lighting systems.
The result renders a “warmer” more natural photograph,
which many customers find more appealing than rigid formal photography.
